Podcasts and Digital Storytelling are great ways to add technology into the classroom. There are so many different ways you can use digital storytelling for assignments and it could be individualized for every student. Students are interested in technology. Many students would rather do an assignment on a computer than write it out and using digital storytelling is a great way to incorporate that into the classroom.
The article on StoryCorps was something that I found extremely interesting. As teachers out job is not only to teach them information, but to also teach them how to be good people. We are partially responsible for the social skills they learn growing up. This is a great way to get students to step outside of their comfort zone, get to know somebody around them whether it is a family member, a classmate, or a teacher, as well as get to learn about a new piece of technology. These interviews really help teach a student a lot about themselves and the people around them. I had some experience with teachers using digital storytelling or different podcasts or videos in the classroom, but learning about StoryCorps was a new one for me! I think it would be a great tool for technology use alone, but it helps expand the student’s knowledge outside of just the classroom.
I love how the articles talked about the use of Serial and NPR (National Public Radio) in the classroom. Maybe I am just a weirdo but I love listening to NPR and Serial when I am driving or on a run so I would love to find an opportunity to share them in the classroom. Although I plan to teach Business and Information Technology classes listening to one of these Podcasts would be a great tool to break up the everyday lessons and get the students to listen to something new and different. Plus, it is still educational and talks about controversial topics like Bowe Bergdahl and Adnan Syed. Maybe I am biased because I personally love Serial podcasts but I think Serial and other podcasts are a great tool that could really get students interested in a piece of technology that is actually educational!
